New Flame

Strong easterly winds are beating up the freighter. If this goes on much longer she will break up.

Spanish Navy in Gibraltar Waters

With increasing frequency the Spanish Navy is treating Gibraltar territorial waters with disdain.

Talk about fellow NATO and EU countries is non-sense, this is the Spanish government exercising what it claims is its rights over the waters around Gibraltar.

A view not shared by Gibraltar nor the UK.

Yet the Royal Navy patrol vessels remain tied up in port as if nothing has happenned lest they offend the sensitivities of Spain.

Breakup of New Flame

Breakup of New Flame, originally uploaded by David Parody.

With the hull of the New Flame showing dangerous weakness all attempts to salvage and re-float the vessel have been abandoned. The efforts are now concentrated on controlling the break-up of the New Flame. Experts believe that the rear of the vessel will float and this will be towed into Gibraltar waters for safe recovery of the remaining fuel oil and cargo.

Expected bad weather in the area is likely to hasten the break up of the ship but impede the operations.

Stern of New Flame

Stern of NEw Flame, originally uploaded by David Parody.

Two ships collided at sea in the early hours of Sunday 12th August about half a mile off Europa Point, Gibraltar. A Danish petrol tanker “Torn Gertrude” has sailed into Algeciras Port in Spain whilst the freighter “New Flame” is heavily damaged believed to be holed amidships and is partially sunk having hit a reef known locally as “Los Picos” (The Peaks) at a depth of 23M. Salvage operations are presently underway with both Gibraltarian and Spanish Authorities co-operating in the salvage. It is believed that most of the ship’s crew were airlifted this morning when it became apparent that the ship was in danger of sinking.

Logic?

OK, can you please explain to me why these lampposts need to be in the middle of the pavement? Why cannot they be placed two feet to the right so that pedestrians can actually use the pavement?
